The Hurt Locker
It's the story of a bomb disposal team working in Iraq. It's a war film that's about saving lives, not killing, and that makes it easier for me to relate. It's also very "now" as "improvised explosive devices" are the main killers of british (and I assume, american) soldiers in Afghanistan. Don't let that put you off. It's out on DVD. It's also one of the frontrunners/winners in the award season.
There are cameos from Guy Pearce, Ralph Fiennes and others, but I'd never heard of the three leads before. Jeremy Renner has received the most attention, proving that doing tv doesn't mean you're second-rate. I hope he beats out George Clooney. The second lead is played by Anthony Mackie who will be performing in A Behanding in Spokane, at the Schoenfeld, very soon. Read about him at In Contention (there's also an interview with Renner).
